“The greatest pleasure in life is doing what people say you cannot do.”
-Walter Bagehot
In the past, many believed that women couldn’t work and they should only remain housewives. Women were regarded as second-class citizens and they stood in the background while men stood in forefront.
A few days after the International day for women, we bring you a woman who went against the conventions of her time and decided to be the first modern Egyptian female doctor. Her name is Hilana Sedarous.
Hilana Sedarous was born in Tanta, in 1904. Inspired by the uprising of women in 1919, she, like many women of that age, decided it was time to challenge many of the stereotypes surrounding women.
Against the odds of her time, she travelled to London in 1922 to study medicine and mathematics, eventually becoming the first Egyptian woman to study in England. After acquiring her M.D in 1930, she returned to Egypt to work in Kitchener hospital in Cairo becoming the first female Coptic doctor.
Later on she was able to establish a private clinic that specialized in gynaecology and obstetrics working untill the age of 70. After retiring, she turned to writing and translating stories for children. Hilana passed away at the age of 94 in the year 1998.
All in all, remember Walt Disney’s quote:
“All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them.”
