Imagine going a year without eating anything. No fats, no carbs, no veggies or fruits. Nothing. Hard to envision, right?
I’m sure we’ve all tried some “miracle” diet at some point in our lives, be it a keto diet, paleo, low fat or even intermittent fasting. We’ve all wanted to look like those photoshopped models on social media and tried to find ways to make that happen quickly but quit after a while. However, one person who truly defied all logic and went above and beyond was Angus Barbieri.
A 27 year old Scottish man, by the name of Angus Barbieri, was determined to lose weight to the point where he stopped eating altogether for 382 days! That’s one year and seventeen days. A world record.
Angus was tired of being obese and checked himself into a hospital in Dundee, weighing 207kg and informed the medical staff that he was ready to lose some weight by fasting. The doctors complied, thinking this was short term, and monitored his health throughout the fast.
They prescribed him vitamins and supplements in order to compensate for the lack of nutrients. During this time, Angus only drank non-caloric beverages such as water, coffee and tea.
At one point, Angus’s blood glucose was constantly low but suffered no symptoms. He continued and passed the 40 day mark, which the doctors feared as fasts exceeding 40 days are dangerous and puts the person at risk. Several cases died attempting to do this. But none of this seemed to rattle Angus; he decided to continue and reach his goal of weighing 180 lbs (81kg).
His unbelievable willpower drove him to achieve his dream by day 382, when he became 125kg lighter and had a great physique.
After such a long time of not enriching his taste buds, you’d think he had a hearty meal, but that was not the case. He simply broke his fast by eating a boiled egg, a slice of buttered bread and a cup of coffee, which he stated he “thoroughly enjoyed and felt very full.”
So what can we takeaway from this enticing story? Once you set your mind to something, once you align your energy with your ambitions, you will break down all the walls forged from years of insecurities. ‘What is now proved was only once imagined’.
