Another View on New Year

Sara Essam

2020

I will start socializing more.

I need to indulge in to a lot of activities.

I’ll start going to the gym.

I’ll start a self-development course.

I like painting, maybe I should take a step forward towards my hobby.

I’ve been suffering from anxiety, I need to start psychotherapy.

We planned a lot at the beginning of this year, got agendas and filled them with dreams and goals. It wouldn’t come to anyone’s mind that this year would take this drastic turn like getting locked at home for months, against our will.

Some of us made good usage of this year and others fell apart. Some got self-time that made them see all their flaws and problems and concentrate on themselves. They were optimistic and felt that they shouldn’t stop their lives.

“This is a stage of my life that I should cope with and move forwards.” They started doing things and exploring new perspectives and worlds. They opened their eyes to the fact that they are an investment that needs to be used wisely.

Some have been away for too long. Busy with their lives that they forget a lot about family traditions, talks and tight hugs. They forgot their foundation and where they started. This quarantine was a wakeup call for them.

Others started doing things they haven’t done for a long time like drawing, writing, talking to friends that they haven’t contacted for too long. Some started new business out of it and others lost their jobs.

On the other hand, there are people who felt paralyzed that they couldn’t move a limb. They felt that death is near and that’s the end of the world. This made them so devastated for too long.

What we can’t deny is the fact that all of us at some point got this shiver of fear and worry.

Could we lose our loved ones?

Could this really be the end of the world?

Would I get infected if I did this or that??

Would there be a vaccine soon??

2021

This year, we are actually going through the whole vicious circle again and the second wave is hitting us early and devastatingly leaving no one. I think by now we all have someone we know that is COVID positive.

We might all feel tired, overwhelmed and scared. But the fact that we are not surprised like last time, is surprisingly making us calmer. We should be calm and set our goals putting in mind that anything can happen as we overcame it last time and will this time too.

Make this new year something astonishingly unforgettable, set your new year’s resolutions, decorate your place, spend time with family, watch movies, bake, communicate , wear your masks and welcome the new year with all its circumstances. It’s a new chapter that might start hard and end up with ease. Always wish for the better.
