Stuck in quarantine and feel bored? Don't worry, 2019 was an incredible year for movies and here’s our pick for the top 3 movies in 2019. Stay safe and happy watching.
THE IRISHMAN
Martin Scorsese talks about the story of the memoir “I Heard You Paint Houses” by Charles Brandt, a former American investigator and writer, in his latest motion picture titled 'The Irishman'.
With what seems to be the greatest cast of all time including Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci returning with a script intricately designed by the great Steven Zaillian, Scorsese is able to provide us with another great mafia classical style, a genre which has engraved a mark before with classics like Goodfellas and Casino, keeping us entertained throughout.
The story is about Frank Sheeran, played by Robert De Niro, a World War II veteran who returns to the US as a business agent for the local teamsters of south Philadelphia with a valuable set of skills and loyalty that attracts the attention of mafia kings at that time.
He soon befriends with members of The Bufalino family, building strong family connections with Russel Bufalino, played by Joe Pesci, a seemingly good Samaritan who provides Frank with a career shift. A house painter, painting houses in only one shade, red. Frank proves to be a valuable addition, quickly moving up the ranks, entering entourage of Jimmy Hoffa, played by Al Pacino.
We see Hoffa, the powerful labour union leader and President of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters union, facing an abundance of challenges and threats from Kennedy’s government and perhaps more dangerously from the mafia. To overcome these obstacles Hoffa can rely on none other than his man, Frank Sheeran.
8.5/10
JOKER
Living under a rock is not a good enough excuse to have not at least seen a couple of scenes from this masterpiece. I almost did not want to write about it because i find it hard that anyone is oblivious to its greatness. Joaquin Phoenix, the 2019 Oscar winner for best actor, dazzles us with his incredible dancing moves, hits home with his crying, coupled with incredible directing by Todd Philips, Oscar winner, and Hildur Guonadóttir’s music to produce a movie that earned the most nominations by the Academy. This movie comes the closest to perfection in 2019 and that is my humble opinion.
9.5/10
MARRIAGE STORY
Marriage story, despite the misleading name, is a story of a married couple that in spite of being introduced to us in a manner that makes us jealous of the love shared between them, the two only are to disappoint us early on by informing us that the relationship is coming to an end.
We go along a journey of making their separation formal and recruiting Laura Dern Nora's, Oscar for best supporting actress, skills and help. A simple plot, very few characters and an idea that has been explored millions of times but why did this movie earn 6 Oscar nominations?
Noah Baumbach’s second talk about a divorce story had provided us with quite the gem. Marriage story is a realistic portrayal of the events that unfold and their deteriorating effect on a successful love story, not a successful marriage story and how it can also impact the people that find themselves within its blast radius.
No flashy camerawork or effects but an abundance of explosive subtle messages. This picture will tear you apart while avoiding the classic portrayal of either the husband or wife. It examines closely many of the conceptions we have of the role of a father or a mother and offers a challenge for those brave enough to think.
Great characters and original script lands it a 9/10.
These movies are our recommendations for enjoying your time and stop panicking for a little time.
