Silver Lining amidst the Chaos of COVID-19

Marwa Gaber

It's amazing yet heart-breaking how many blessings we are given that fail to catch our eye. Think about it. These past few weeks have been nothing short of miracles. That storm, it cleansed the entire country IN JUST 2 DAYS!

During those 2 days, not a soul dared to leave the safety of their homes, we self-quarantined before the whole virus thing began. Do you not consider that a miracle in disguise? The outbreak of COVID-19 reduced our toxic load on the atmosphere by a whopping 10% in NYC and 50% in China. It lead to the return of ducks, dolphins and swans in Italy. Penguins in Chicago are roaming free in the aquarium.

Our Earth is healing! It's healing because we're at home not driving to work and spreading emissions, we're not in our factories & we're not outside cutting down trees. We're at home, away from nature and we're finally allowing it to do its own thing.

Think of it this way. How many times were you frustrated and decided to take a walk through some gardens? How many times did you gaze at the stars and felt your spirit being replenished? On tough days, we remind ourselves that summer is almost here and we’ll soon be sun tanning on the beach. We always turn to greenery for our problems, where will we go if everything's gone? Being at home means having more hours to spend with family. Use it to teach your kids the importance of giving back to nature ; for the trees are our roots. Without them, we'd die. Without us, they'd live.

All the times you said you didn't have time to do X, you have now been given the time. One of life’s greatest blessings. So work on your goals, whether that was to workout more, read more books, or learn a new instrument. Anything is possible. You can even do some indoor growing with your siblings or kids. Remember that “beans in a cotton wool” experiment? Give it another go.

This 2 weeks quarantine isn’t meant to torture you, it is meant to give nature the chance to heal from the injuries we caused it and at the same time, avoid spreading the virus. Win-win situation, am I right?

Just stay at home. In the end, we were put on this Earth to help it grow, to make it better, not bring it to ashes. So as doctors, engineers, lawyers etc., we are studying to help humanity in the future. Don't prosecute nature; defend it, build it up & heal it.

Remember, it was there before we came. We needed it, it never needed us.

“Earth provides enough to satisfy every man's needs, but not every man's greed” ~ Mahatma Gandhi

I just hope after all this is said and done and things go back to normal, we don't go back to our nasty habits. At least do one thing each day that helps Mother Nature breathe. Plant a seed, water some plants in the street or carpool, anything.
