‘Would you like you, if you met you?’
Let this resonate with you for a second. You’ve most likely thought about characteristics you wanted to change; ‘I wish I was more outgoing’, ‘I wish I was more patient’ but you never thought about it further.
What if you did? What if you worked on the aspects you’ve always wished to leave behind? Think of the endless possibilities of the person you could become a year from now.
Who you are cannot be defined in a sentence, for you are the product of all your past personalities; versions of you. Your thoughts, memories, the books you read, and the people you surround yourself with all impact who you are. Most of the personalities you’ve acquired over the years may have died off but they never leave entirely. Each one engraved a fragment that contributed to the person you will become next.
We have all read some ground-breaking news at some point and dreamt to achieve such ambitious goals, yet we return back to our daily cycle, without a plan to accomplish these desires or even a slight modification to our routine.
You cannot get where you want without sacrifice. Now, this isn’t going to be your traditional motivational piece about putting in the hard work and effort; that goes without saying. Rather it’s the fear of letting go and the fear of change that you must not let define your actions.
A simple example is when you want to leave a conversation that you feel is not beneficial to your growth but you worry that you might lose this person as a friend.
‘Your new life is going to cost you your old life’. In order to truly be ourselves and find out who that may be, we will risk our surroundings and break certain bonds; we will let go of the parts of ourselves that no longer serve us.
Throughout this venture, we will learn to adapt, gain a more resilient outlook and create stronger bonds. Nothing you lose remains lost; you’ll shed your skin and expose a new attitude.
We envy those who have achieved a peaceful mind, yet we believe those who are constantly smiling and happy are naïve or crazy. A dream of being free from people’s judgements and finally embracing all the parts of you that society deemed unacceptable is not far from reach; it simply needs a bit more effort every day to reset our minds.
Incorporate a positive new habit in your routine every once in a while and watch the results begin to unfold. These small steps make a huge difference.
Envision this, if you were to create a mood board about the qualities you wish to obtain, what would you add?
