The Illusion of Perfectionism

Mariam Khaled

“At 6:58 p.m. you tell yourself that you’ll start at 7:00 sharp, sounds like a “perfect” beginning!” You think that you need a new notebook to create the perfect notes for this subject so you wait till you get new ones! If this sounds familiar, then you’d better know you’re not alone.

If you’re always at dilemma, how could someone be so committed to perfection and not just that into hard work? You should know that your point of strength is actually just a barrier!

While perfection seems like a great temptation, it is also one of the reasons lying behind procrastination. Following the “All or Nothing” rule is just horrible. This negative voice (the one that keeps hindering your progress and convincing you that if something is not complete then it is of no value) will always have something to say.

What you should actually do is just mute this voice! It would be a thousand times better to start. The solution is that simple. Progress is the key! Instead of waiting for the perfect situation (for there is no perfect), you should just know that something if not the whole thing is for sure more fruitful than nothing.

Another method is to put your plans into action, chunk your tasks so that you can count each step! Each step shortens the road, “a thousand miles journey starts with a single step”.

In fact, there is no such a thing as perfection for perfectionists. If one did not notice they will always remain in a ceaseless quest for this mirage, nothing will ever get done, at least without some “last minute cliff-hanger”.

One extra thing one should know for sure is that you are not challenging your self-worth in every new task. There is no reason to compromise your self-esteem in every single challenge.

A person, a human should never experience the emotions of having their worthiness put at stalks for the sake of anything. It is okay to fail for that is how humanity progresses. Don’t ever let fear of failure hinder you! There is always a chance to fix things later.

A wise man once said "The lesson is in the perfection of the endings not the imperfections of the beginnings". There is always an opportunity to ameliorate the imperfections in the beginnings later. Doubtless, this is more advantageous than waiting for the illusion of perfection.

In conclusion, identifying the problem is huge leap towards the solution. Now, don’t you think it is time to begin?
